Queen of Hearts – Book Review – Amber

Hello, everyone! Today I’ll be sharing my opinion about Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes with you. Now, some of you may know that I’m quite a fan of retellings (The Lunar Chronicles, for example) and this book has been on my wishlist for a long time. When I came across it in a bookshop in Oslo, Norway, I couldn’t let it stay there. I finished it within two days and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series (The Wonder). Without further ado, let’s start!

I really enjoyed the writing style; it was easy to read and I was very happy I finally read it. I love Dinah, but I can’t put my finger on her relationship with Wardley. I think he’s hiding something or you know, isn’t in love with Dinah at all. That was the only thing that kinda bothered me a lot. The world of Wonderland was created really well – it was described very detailed and it made me imagine and see it; the way I like it with books. I didn’t think about or connected it the movies from Alice in Wonderland because it was so different. Dinah is actually nice and doesn’t really have many flaws, except for her ongoing jealousy for her half-sister Vittiore, which I think is misplaced. It really gets clear in the end.

I don’t like the King of Hearts. I’d rather see him in a coffin or being locked up in the Black Towers. I can’t believe he is so cruel, not only to Dinah, but also to Charles and Vittiore. Of course, he was lying from the beginning of the book until, I guess the other books. Dinah is just too stupid to see it. For example, she doesn’t see the likeness between Vittiore and Faina Baker, not even in the end as she sees Vittiore’s reaction towards the beheading of what I think is her mother.

I loved everything, from the croquet plays, to Charles’ madness. I gave it five out of the possible five stars and recommend it to everyone who likes the villain-themed and fairy tale stories. I hope you liked my review!

Bye, guys!
