Trapped in Silver – Spoiler Free Book Review – Amber

Hello everyone! I thought it was time for another spoiler-free book review. This time, I’ll be talking about Trapped in Silver by Emily Sowden. Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. Let’s start!

 Title: Trapped in Silver.

Author: Emily Sowden.

Average Goodreads rating: 3.79 stars.

My rating: 3.75 stars.

Publication date: February 7, 2017

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Courage comes from a shadowed place in our hearts; a blurred line that straddles love and sheer stupidity.
To seventeen-year-old Ava, wild woodcats, hungry stragglers, and simple-minded townsfolk are the evils she’s grown accustomed to. But when Ethan, an unusual man with eyes of smoke and fire opal, enters her world she quickly understands that there are worse things out there than drunken men and carnivorous forest creatures. She’s a specialised liar and a hell of a fighter, but against a group of animalistic men called Berserkers she struggles to survive the encounter as the desperate swing of a dagger is all it takes to change her life for good.
Half-dead and hunted by the Berserker’s leader when he forms a monstrous obsession with her, Ava escapes his pursuit in an unfamiliar land full of impossible creatures, unlikely allies, and the man she doesn’t know whether to kiss or kill.
But after dreadful news of her missing brother surfaces, Ava becomes more involved in the centuries-long war and begins to unravel the reasons behind her relentless nightmares, discovering truths long-buried in a violent history of love, loss and betrayal.

The main characters:

  • Ava: she is the main character of the book and one of the points of view the book was written of. She is smart and sometimes reckless but nonetheless, she cares about the other characters. In my opinion, she was quite a strong character but sometimes she got angry without a reason which I didn’t really get. She knows her world and has quite frankly a sort of panic attack where she has a vision of some sort. I liked her.
  • Ethan: Ethan is the other point of view. He was very mysterious but also very caring and kind towards Ava and the other characters. I liked him as well, but I would have liked to read more about his past.
  • Ric: when we first meet Ric he is very nice and kind, when we meet him again he is a monster out of control, then we meet him again and he is himself, which I liked best. I liked how he was towards the other characters as well as his mindset. He was always doing something to help someone out. I liked it.
  • Lavender: if you have to describe her I would say she is smart, caring and kind. And hopelessly in love with Ric. I think she and Ethan were my favourite characters.

My opinion:

The beginning of the book was very slow but the second half everything started to go fast. Ava figured more things about the ”creatures” and she put the pieces of the puzzle together. We get to see how her character grows and becomes more secure of herself. She makes friends with her rescuers and she also starts to like someone. I shipped them.

For those wondering, there is little to no romance but it didn’t really matter to me. I think if there was more romance included in the book it would overshadow the real point of the book. Figuring out why the berserkers wanted to kill Ava. Once we get further into the book we also see more of Ava her ”visions”. I really liked this aspect of the book because she isn’t special or anything but she is supposed to be human. They want to figure out if she is maybe not and if not what she actually is.

I liked this book but because the first half of the book and sometimes confusing plotline I gave this book a 3.75 out of 5 stars. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to read some new high fantasy!

That’s it for today, I hope you liked it! Thanks to Ben of the Oftomespublishing for giving us a copy of the book!
